This app is a beautiful animated board game of Kokkuri-san, a Japanese game that gained popularity during the Meiji period and is also considered by some as a form of divination, based partially on Western table-turning (like the Ouija board game). The name kokkuri is an onomatopoeia meaning "to nod up and down", and refers to the movement of the actual kokkuri mechanism. The kanji are used to write words as a phonetic equivalent. The games characters reflect the popular belief that the movement of the mechanism is caused by supernatural agents (ko, foxes; gu, mythical creatures; ri, raccoons).
